Eastern Counties Football League First Division

March Town United FC v Debenham LC FC

1st December 2012

The GER, Robingoodfellows Lane, March

Just three committee members and five supporters followed the Hornets to March in Cambridgeshire for yesterday’s first division match against March Town United but considering the weather it was good to see anybody watching. Thankfully we were spared the promised wintry sleet showers as we were greeted by brilliant sunshine but the wind was bitter as the temperature was near to freezing and what spectators there were were well wrapped up as the temperature plummeted when the sun dipped below the horizon around half time. Debenham were without the services of long term injury victim Ed Cussons, fellow defender Tom Hardwick and midfielder Ben Green so the team took a shuffle again with James Payne and Ben Atkinson at full back and Lewis Kemp back in his right sided midfield role. New signing Tom Ross played wide on the right with Jack Seccombe wide on the left flank and with Sam Chilvers in goal Derren Burn was on the bench as an outfield player.

Debenham started the game with the sun at their backs making life a little bit more difficult for the March Town keeper and they started at a good pace as Jack Seccombe intercepted a midfield pass on halfway before running into the penalty area where he was forced wide to the left and shot for goal but his decision was perhaps not the best as his shot was way off target and there were two Debenham forwards calling for a cross in the centre of the goal area. March Town’s first attack ended with a wild shot that flew yards over the crossbar before a throw in for Debenham saw Nathan Vincent gaining control of the ball in the March Town penalty area and he turned and poked the ball towards goal but with little force and no real threat.

March Town had a real chance on 7 minutes when Tom Fenner missed a clearance and the ball fell nicely for the left full back Sam Darwin but his striking has a lot of evolution to cope with yet as he sent his shot well wide of the goal when well placed. March’s number 11 Ash Brand laid a pass to number 4 Max Mattless but again his shot was way off target.

Debenham regained their composure as David Lampshire passed the ball to Tom Ross wide on the right and Tom made ground into the Match penalty area but was crowded out by a gaggle of defenders then in the 11th minute a really weak back pass by a March Town defender presented David Lampshire with a chance to run in on goal but Ben Collett in the March goal came out to make a good blocking save.

March Town had their best chance of the half after 12 minutes when number 11 Ash Brand moved infield from the left wing and shot at goal where Sam Chilvers was relieved to see the ball loop over his head and bounce off the top of the cross bar.

A nice through ball released Tom Ross but again the March Town keeper smothered the ball as the play swung from end to end but with Debenham always looking more of a threat without actually getting an effort on target. Jack Seccombe’s driven cross ended up un the side netting before James Payne exchanged passes with Lewis Kemp then crossed from the by-line but the cross just eluded David Lampshire’s attempts to get at it. A really good passing move involving Rob Kemp, Nathan Vincent and David Lampshire ended as the ball was cleared away to Lewis Kemp whose first time shot flew wide of the left post. Tom Fenner was cautioned for bringing down Ash Brand as he threatened to run through the middle of the Debenham defence but the resulting free kick flew straight to Sam Chilvers who caught it comfortably.

Jack Seccombe carried the ball into the home penalty area but was crowded out before he could cross or shoot then a corner kick taken by Ben Atkinson fell for David Lampshire but his powerful shot was blocked  by a defender’s outstretched leg. Tom Ross had a shot blocked before Jack Seccombe again ran into the box but his shot was wide of the target before March Town created three shots at goal in sharp time and a corner kick but none of the efforts were anywhere near to troubling the Debenham goal. A throw in from Ben Atkinson fell to Nathan Vincent but his overhead kick was off target then a corner taken by Tom Ross was headed wide of the left post by Tom Fenner.

March Town started the second half a gear higher than the first and pegged Debenham back but some stout defending by the Hornets kept the ball out and a ball to David Lampshire was fed on to Jack Seccombe whose efforts earned a corner kick that was caught comfortably by the home keeper. A really good tackle from James Payne stopped a March Town attack then another Debenham attack was snuffed out by the home central defenders when David Lampshire threatened. A repeat of the move a minute later again saw David Lampshire make progress into the March Town penalty area but again the ball was lost at the critical moment. Debenham enjoyed a period of pressure and possession but as before a lot of good approach play was wasted as the final ball didn’t create a clear opening.

The 63rd minute proved pivotal in the game as the Hornets defence over elaborated and Nathan Vincent was caught in possession leading to a free kick to March Town in a central position just 20 yards from goal. March’s number 7 DAN EMMINGTON stepped up to strike a shot over the defensive wall towards the left side of the goal and with Sam Chilvers rooted to the spot the ball sailed just inside the left post and settled in the folds of the net. A bad goal to concede from an unnecessary free kick.

Debenham continued to play their passing game and made a number of good moves each move ended with the ball being cleared away by the home defence. March Town had a couple of shots at goal but with no accuracy or power before a number of substitutions changed the shape of the March Town team but not the general play of the game. The Hornets attacked as Jack Seccombe ran at the defenders and Tom Ross’s cross was straight at the keeper then Tom Fenner got forward but his pass was to a defender but still Debenham could not find a way through.

In the 80th minute a great run up the left wing by Lewis Kemp produced a cross that fell for Nathan Vincent to shoot but his effort sailed high over the bar. David Lampshire chased a back pass and very nearly succeeded in gaining possession but the game was won in the 82nd minute when a ball into the Debenham penalty area was forced towards the net but blocked only for substitute TOBY OGBONNA to follow up and fire the ball across the goal and into the net to give the Hares a two goal advantage. Debenham were totally disappointed to be behind by two goals after playing so well but will be aware that the lack of goal threat is a real burden for the team that needs to be lifted .

At the end of the game a free kick was lifted over the bar by Nathan Vincent but the game ended without further scoring to bring a close to an uncomfortably clod afternoon for the travelling supporters.
