7th August 2011            Reserves Draw with Gorleston                        11:05 am
Gorleston FC visited Maitlands yesterday afternoon to take on both the reserves and the first team of Debenham LC FC in a “double header” of pre-season friendly matches. The reserves played well against a good Gorleston second string but were short of a few players who might have made a difference and it took a defensive mix up to allow Gorleston to take the lead in the first half and then they missed a penalty soon after. The Hornets equalised in the second half through Steve Burton and a number of substitutions were made which saw the reserves’ team manager Jason Pettit take to the pitch in a deep lying central midfield position to be joined by Debenham LC reserves and under 18s general manager and Debenham legend Gary French who belied his maturity to put in a splendid performance in central defence. Reserves’ manager Jason Pettit was pleased by the players’ attitude but the missing players made a difference.
Apologies for not personalising the action shots for the reserves, unfortunately I do not know the players’ names so I use a general description of the scene. Maybe as time goes on I will get to know so that `each player can be named.

3rd August 2011     Saffron Walden Withdraw from the League              6:40 pm
News has come through today that Saffron Walden Town FC have decide to withdraw from the Ridgeons Football League Division 1 following developments at the club which meant that they could not guarantee to complete all of their fixtures this season so an early decision sees them resign from the league. They hope to be able to re-apply for membership of the Ridgeons League for next season 2012-2013.
So the Ridgeons Football League Divfision 1 is now just 16 teams.
This means that the Hornets have two first division league fixtures removed from the list on 15th October 2011 at Maitlands and 31st March 2012 at Catons Lane and it also fixes Debenham’s opponents in the FA Vase 2nd qualifying round when we will now entertain Team Bury on 24th September 2011.
3rd August 2011             Bill Mahood Leaves the Club                              8:40 pm

Bill said that he had enjoyed his time with Debenham LC FC but felt that the time was right to move on. The club would like to thank Bill for all of the hard work that he gave to the club, his cheery smile and ready laugh will be missed on matchdays as will his contribution to the catering. He wasn’t nicknamed the “Soup Vicar” for nothing”

7th August 2011          First Team Beaten by Gorleston                          10:15 am
Debenham LC FC first team played Gorleston FC in the second match of yesterday’s “Double Header” of pre season friendly matches. The home team played well for the first half hour and took the lead when Liam Smith ran onto a through ball that split the visitors’ defensive line and beat the keeper across his body to put the ball in the net. Gorleston upped their play after that and began to assert themselves and equalised just ten minutes later and indeed could have been in front had another effort not been ruled out for offside. In the second half a number of substitutions changed the balance of the team and Gorleston showed their class and power as they scored three more goals to run out winners by 4 goals to 1. Manager Rob Allum didn’t have much to say about the game except that we expect three players to be available for Tuesday’s final friendly match at Maitlands against Woodbridge Athletic FC.

9th August 2011     Hornets Defeated by Woodbridge Athletic               10:40 pm
Debenham LC FC played out their final pre-season match with a home encounter to Woodbridge Athletic FC.The game was competitive and even with the home team  making half chances that were not converted into goals and it was the visitors who won the game with a fortunate own-goal from Shaun French when the ball was played towards him from close range and he couldn’t head the ball in the right direction and it was past Sam and in the goal in a flash. Second half substitutions livened up the Debenham LC play with Nathan Vincent catching the eye in a wide right sided midfield role and Marc Wake looked much more effective as a striker despite his limited opportunities but it seemed that everything that the Hornets tried fell foul of a poor pass or an interception as it all just didn’t work out on the night. The visitors had the same trouble as they made good play through midfield only to fail for want of a final pass to make a clear opening. So an evenly fought game, evenly matched teams and a fortunate own goal to win the match. This will give manager Rob Allum and his assistant Dale Vince plenty to think about before the opening division 1 league match of the season on Saturday at Godmanchester Rovers.
Don’t forget to make sure that you contact Kevin Snell on 07855 802258 if you want to reserve a seat on the Galloways coach going to Godmanchester for Saturday’s first league match. Details of the arrangements can be seen below. It will be leaving the Leisure Centre at 12:15 pm sharp - don’t be late!!!
