Whitton United FC Reserves v Debenham LC FC Reserves
29th October 2011
King George V Ground, Ipswich
Three last minute call-offs in the First team meant a hasty re-arrangement and some difficult decisions for Reserves manager Andy Seaman ahead of this often arduous fixture.
Debenham kicked off facing the wind and sun and both sides started energetically. Early exchanges however, were hampered by a prolific use of the whistle resulting in a number of free-kicks that all came to nothing.
Debenham suffered the first scare when the Whitton No. 9 should have done better in front of goal. This was followed on 13 mins by the first score, when a fine run and low cross by the No.11 was turned in by the No. 8 on the 6 yard box. 1-0.
This score lifted the home side and unsettled The Yellows, whose hurried passes and lack of control were costing them possession in vital areas of the field.
On 21 mins Smith scuffed wide from a quickly taken free-kick by Chilvers, as Debenham were slowly getting back into the game.  Another free-kick and teasing corner was not dealt with cleanly and Smith was again unfortunate to see his shot from the edge of the area deflected into the arms of the keeper.
Play now began to swing from end to end with Barker and Johnson dealing well with the lively Whitton attack and seaman and Smith keeping the opposition defenders busy.
On 33 mins Whitton were awarded a penalty when a fierce shot from the No. 8 was adjudged to have struck Barker’s arm. The same No. 8 was given the task and converted low to Coe’s right. 2-0.
On the stroke of half-time a Johnson free-kick led to a melee in the Whitton area that left Barker prostrate and in need of attention, but no infringement was spotted by the Ref.

With the wind now at their backs Debenham made the brighter start with Chilvers, in his uncustomary striker role proving an ideal target man.
However, against the run it was the Whitton No. 3 with a forceful run and deft touch over the advancing Coe that almost sealed the game, but for a timely goal line clearance from Hambling.
King replaced newcomer Alexander and almost immediately the break in play favoured the Yellows. Cridland, back from injury, picked the ball up on the right and cutting in unleashed a fierce dipping shot. With the keeper well beaten it struck the underside of the bar and bounced invitingly for SMITH, instinctively backing up to react first and force in past the flailing keeper. 2-1.
Three mins later it was all square. A superb through ball from Johnson split the defence and Smith took off down the left before putting in a low telling cross that beat the defence to find the waiting CHILVERS who gratefully planted home off the far post.  2-2.
With their tails up Debenham began to push forward, King especially getting involved from the back and Teeder and Cridland seeing more of the ball in midfield.
The game was there to be won and Whitton’s neat passing game was testing the Debenham defence. A series of attacks and corner, that Coe did well to punch clear, all added to the tension.
Burton replaced the tiring Chilvers in a straight swap on 82 mins.
With barely 5 mins remaining Whitton were unlucky when first they hit the post and then the rebound was snatched wide when a goal looked certain.
Attack turned to defence turned to attack as the last few minutes were frantically played out by both sides desperate to secure the extra points, but it was not to be with neither forcing the winner.
